Steering is always in a hard to reach and awkward position so everyone tends to ignore it until something is going wrong. Usually by this time it is a corroded mess and the person paying the bill can’t understand why it is so expensive to fix.

Hydraulic oil should be kept at the right level, steering strops should be checked for chafe and tension. Their should be no play between the quadrant and rudder shaft.
